According to Iseljenici otoka Brača
by K. Derado and I. Čizmić (Brački Zbornik 13, 1982),
712 persons emigrated from Bol in the time period from 1864 to 1940.
It was economic emigration, in contrast to the emigration during and
after the Second World War which was political predominantly. As
high as this emigration was for a settlement of population below two
thousand, it has to be noticed that this is recorded, legal
emigration only - while illegal was also high.
Emigration
from Bol peaked in teens and twenties of 20th century,
interrupted only by the First World War, as a consequence of
agricultural hardship, mainly the devastation of vineyards. In
several years the emigration involved from two to three percent of
total population.
