not  until  but  unless

The Croatian drive against corruption shows some determination: even former (but recent) high government officials are prosecuted nowadays. In the premier’s comment during a press conference related to a particular arrest, however, one word caught my attention. "Everyone is innocent", she said, "until proven guilty". I don’t like the word "until". It should be "everyone is innocent unless proven guilty".

Not until but unless. See the difference here? Until makes it sound like all of us sinners are walking free around just because we aren’t disclosed yet as being guilty. And the time of our freedom is ticking away. Unless, the word unless, preserves the dignity of a person and his/her social status.

Incidentally, the word "until" in the "innocent until proven guilty", isn’t that a manifestation of the Judeo-Christian morality?
