I
grew up on comics and cartoons and I like them forever. However,
comic strips and comic books were favorites in my boyhood (those
of Croatian comics genius Andrija Maurović especially): while
as an adult I enjoy more cartoons and caricatures.
A
caricature, which is a rendered image showing the features of its
subject in a simplified and/or exaggerated way, can be insulting
or complimentary for a political purpose or solely for
entertainment. It is essential that the subject of a caricature is
recognizable, so an accompanying text is unnecessary. I like the
"no-text" feature in cartoons also, even more, because
it engages your own imagination in rendering the message included.
Well, most cartoons come with a caption or speech balloons but the
best - that’s my assessment - come without them. As an example,
take a look at the cartoon on the right, a complete social story
by the Croatian cartoonist Dinko Žibrat, first published in 1975.
A
cartoon is a form of visual art, typically drawing or painting
intended for satire or humor. Often, cartoons are the only
actually true and relevant messages in newspapers. "They
are able to pull off intelligent social comment, pure truths not
found elsewhere in the news pages, and had the ability to make it
all funny, entertaining, and pertinent (Elayne Boosler)".
