Croatia,
a personal view
For
many years, when asked if I would return to Croatia, my answer was
along the lines "Croatia is my motherland and US is now my
homeland; while the motherland has sentimental ties, the homeland
brings improved living environment". But more question
followed and I got tired of more explanations. So, nowadays, my
answer is rather short and somewhat persuasive: "There were
reasons for my emigration – and they stay".
To
tell you the truth, those reasons amplified in recent years. One
reason very likely are my prolonged summer vacations in Croatia.
Plus, being retired, which means not being daily under
professional bred making pressure, I devote a lot of time thinking
about Croatia, about Croatian state and Croatian people.
In
short, there is absolutely nothing good on the horizon - above,
behind or around - as an inner guide of Croatian people to civil
democracy. And this is not because of an irresponsible government
alone. Nothing good could be expected without a fundamental change
of the integrity, credibility, faiths, and ethics of the
citizenry. But Croatia, while pretending to follow technological
progress of the European countries, increasingly turns to own past
for the cultural and political restoration of the society. A nice
idea when you have something worthful to restore but not Croatian
folklore and historical fairy tales.
I
could list a lot of examples, yet just one today, in four stages:
(1) The Prime Minister goes to jail because of corruption and
extortion; (2) his Cabinet does not resign; (3) Parliament does
not recall the Cabinet; (4) people do not protest on the streets -
a certain level of laying and cheating is widely acceptable.
Maybe,
just maybe, it is not a shame to be born Croat but it is
unfortunate, certainly. |
