that‘s
how I greet and address my daughter in Croatian. It’s impossible
to translate the expression because it is a vocative case (direct
address) in Croatian language and neither my daughter nor daughter,
mine in English will do the job. Furthermore, the translation is
not even close in the melody of pronunciation.
And
recently I was privileged to address my daughter with an additional
tremble in my voice: on the 23rd of this month she was awarded 2012 Henry Russell Award from the University of Michigan for her
"exceptional scholarship and conspicuous ability as a
teacher". Forty six of her scientific papers and some previous
awards were mentioned at the award presentation. Am I a proud
father? You guess.
What
previous awards? She has received an NSF Career Award (2008), the
best paper awards from Hypertext (2008), ICWSM (2010 and 2011), and
the most influential paper of the decade award from Web Intelligence
Center (2011). Please notice: of the decade. Am I a proud
father? You guess.
Although
I can’t be sure what is, if any, my genetic and
cultural/educational contribution here, I am a proud father. You don’t
have to guess.
