For
Federer fans, like me, his performance at recent Barclays ATP World
Tour Finals in London was a joy. It is a great pleasure to see him
moving effortlessly to each shot as if this is a ballet performance.
Federer’s fine-tuned footwork separates him from the most ATP
players and moves like his don’t come from nowhere. "If
footwork was easy", was a comment from Tom Gullickson (former
World No. 4 doubles)," they wouldn’t call it footwork."
However,
something else was noticeable also: Federer added more muscle to his
"dancing" at the end of rather mediocre year (by his
standards). And there is a danger in that practice:
Generally,
in sports, we have better performances that we have ever had, but
there are more injuries and fewer athletes able to sustain high
perform- ance levels for an extended career. Will Federer maintain
the right balance? Athleticism is, after all," the ability to
execute athletic movements at optimum speed with precision, style
and grace" (Vern Gambetta).
