The
Center for World-Class Universities of Shanghai Jiao Tong University
released on August 15 the 2011 Academic Ranking of World
Universities (ARWU), marking its 9th consecutive year of measuring
the performance of top universities world- wide. Take a look, it’s
an overwhelming dominance of US uni- versities. For instance, in
overall ranking of top 20 universities, 17 (85%) are US ! And among
them Harvard, the colossus- quality. If you look at main English
speaking countries (US + UK + Canada + Australia), the dominance is
even more pronounced [ROLLOVER]. There are 12 countries with at least 10 universities in top 500. Russia has only 2, India only 1.

The
ranking in special subjects and fields reveals some interesting
facts. For instance, the highest Israel’s university in overall
ranking is 57th while Israel has 4 universities in top 30
computer science. Click on the title of a subject or field to see
