The
huge wildfire on the western part of the island of Brač,
currently under control, was a couple of miles away from our pojata
but the scenery in our view was magnificent and terrifying at the
same time, and the smoke in our nostrils has warned us about the
reality of the scene. For three days and three nights, close to four
hundred firefighters, supported from the air and sea, fought to
protect several small towns and villages and to minimize the
agricultural damage. Over four thousand hectares of pine forest,
olive groves, and vineyards are scorched.
They
say there are good fires, ecologically crucial, clearing out dead
brush and returning nutrients to the soil. So, what are the human
tolerance limits for a wildfire?
