Sometimes,
when I can not avoid Croatians euphoria about themselves (best this
and that, most beautiful this and that, on the whole globe, of
course) and it often sounds ridiculous to me, I wander: did I become
unpatriotic to my homeland Croatia?
It
happens to be a nice coincidence that, in days I prepare for the
return to US, when sorting my old color slides, I’ve spotted the
map of my 1968 summer trip across North America: from Ottawa through
Canada westwards to the Pacific coast, south along the coast and
back through US, eastwards . Driving alone, camping only, hiking a
lot. The emphasis was on the National Parks and National Monuments
of the West and Pacific states. Thousands of miles in roughly six
weeks out of my postdoctoral years.
It
was that trip which changed my world view forever. |
