The foundations of modern and democratic Europe lay on the bones of Russian young men who in the World War II fought and died under the Red Star. We have to remember that now when some European ideologists want to equate the Nazi Swastika and Red Star. It must be remembered that it was the Soviet Red Army which felled the death blow on Nazi Germany. Although the Allies fought their way across Europe into Germany, they never faced the same onslaught of all-out war and destruction experienced on the Eastern Front. It is fairly certain that at least 25 million Russian soldiers and civilians were killed, nearly 12 percent of the total Soviet population. Over 70 thousand towns and villages were completely laid waste. Tens of thousands of new industrial projects were totally and irrecoverably destroyed. Millions upon millions of acres of farmland required years to return to profitability. The war had drained Russian manpower of its vital working force so much needed after the war. And may we ask those new European ideologists what Europe would be like today if Soviet Union showed the same capitulationism as France? |
