Jared Diamond, the author of Why Is Sex Fun (Basic Books, New York,1997), answers to some of his critics:

why is sex fun

By itself, the title Why Is Sex Fun? invites the scornful answer, "Because it feels good, you idiot! What sort of ivory-tower scientist are you not to know that?" Of course I know that it feels good; the real question is why we humans are almost unique in having evolved so that sex feels good to us at the wrong times, when a woman isn’t fertile (e.g. when she is pregnant, postmenopausal, or in the long nonovulatory phase of her monthly cycle), whereas animals evolved the good sense and economy of time and effort to have sex only when the female is ovulating and capable of being fertilized. That evolutionary question about human sexuality proves still hard to answer and subject to conflicting theories. At the end of that 168-page book on sex, I had to conclude that I still don’t know why human sex is (i.e., why it evolved to be) practiced just for fun, nor why the male human penis is (in relation to man’s body size) four times the size of a gorilla’s - seemingly a huge waste of protoplasm on the part of man.
