50th anniversary of my high school graduation (5) When in 1953 we enrolled into the Fourth High School (IV gimnazija), it was a school for boys only. As a class, we stayed 'boys only' up to our graduation. However, in mid-fifties the gender separation was abandoned in Croatian education, and starting with the academic year 1957/58, female graduates start to prevail. The girls’ dominance in recent years is hard to explain - that is what my friends are telling me in Croatia. NOTE: There is a gap from 1978 to 1993 due to an unfortunate Croatian experiment in education when vocational education was strongly favored, and the Fourth High School did not function as a general high school (gimnazija). |
