Starting from 2002, Reporters Without Borders are publishing the worldwide index of countries according to their respect for press freedom. Recently (October 2006) they published their fifth report and now we already have some historical prospect on the subject. The graphs below extract the data on Balkan countries (left) and a worldwide selection (right), for a comparison. It has to be noticed that all counties on the two graphs are from the upper (better) half of the index list.

Reporters Without Borders: 2002-2006

Reporters Without Borders compiled a questionnaire with 50 criteria for assessing the state of press freedom in each country. It includes every kind of violation directly affecting journalists (such as murders, imprisonment, physical attacks and threats) and news media (censorship, confiscation of issues, searches and harassment). It registers the degree of impunity enjoyed by those responsible for such violations. It also takes account of the legal situation affecting the news media (such as penalties for press offences, the existence of a state monopoly in certain areas and the existence of a regulatory body) and the behavior of the authorities towards the state-owned news media and the foreign press. It also takes account of the main obstacles to the free flow of information on the Internet. It does not look at human rights violations in general, just press freedom violations. Could a correlation with some country statistics be established? See  more graphs .

In 2002 the Index covered 139 countries, up to 168 in 2006; others were not included in the absence of reliable information.
