On
immigration
I
am a legal immigrant and I am not one to support illegal
immigration. When supporters of illegal immigration trumpet that
illegal immigrants are human beings, I would like to remind them
that legal immigrants are human beings as well. The same is true for
the native Americans. And we are talking about our country. The
people of this country are beyond doubt very tolerant to foreigners,
there is no other country in the world so supportive and sympathetic
to immigrants, as the attitude toward immigration reflects the faith
into the American dream: it is possible for every man and woman to
rise as far as their talent and energy allow, regardless of how
deprived and underprivileged they are at start.
However,
in the very basis of the American dream is the realization of a
lawful society and conservation of existing values: societal
institutions, civilized manners, work ethics, educational standards,
religious tolerance, respect of the common (main) language of
communication, etc. It is not to say that those values are either
perfect or incontestable, but that their changes are to be induced
in a manageable (controllable and lawful) way. And it is for that
reason that immigration should be controlled, i.e. only legal
immigration. One may argue that those who built present America were
able to do so because American Indians could not impose their
immigration policy at the time; however, cheap and anecdotal
historical arguments are never fruitful.
